Synopsis[]

Bernard and Akecheta[]

Bernard wakes up in a simulation and hears the voice of his son Charlie. He follows the boy, walking through scenes from the Gala Massacre and the aftermath of Dolores' elimination of Rehoboam. He finally enters a white room, where Akecheta greets him. The two men converse, during which Bernard reveals that he has seen the end of human civilization, that his precognitive abilities make it possible to determine exactly which course of action will prevent the fall of man, and that at the end of every path, he dies. Akecheta notes that the world they are in is one of many and tells Bernard that he must make a choice: return to the real world and thus ensure his own sacrifice or stay and allow humanity to destroy itself.

Bernard and Stubbs[]

Bernard wakes up in his hideout, just as Stubbs walks in. Bernard thanks him for keeping an eye on the place for many years and tells him to put a shovel in the trunk of their car before they leave. Driving up to a diner, Bernard convinces Stubbs to help him with his plan by correctly predicting that the diner will only be able to serve him a tuna melt instead of the pastrami sandwich he wanted. As Stubbs enjoys his lunch, Bernard grabs a steak knife and kills two men in the parking lot. He hides the bodies in Stubbs' car and hands him the shovel as another vehicle drives up. Bernard tells the driver that he seeks the same thing as her organization, and that the two men she was sent to pick up were hosts. The driver agrees to take Bernard and Stubbs with her after they agree to wear blindfolds and restraints.

Caleb and Maeve[]

Maeve and Caleb walk through the streets of Temperance, which Maeve is quick to identify as being almost a carbon copy of Sweetwater; she even stops Caleb from picking up a can of tin condensed milk dropped by a blond-haired woman. To enter the lower levels of the park, the couple enters the Butterfly Club, run by a host identical to Maeve. A gangster named Hecky Armone, his gun moll, and several other criminals burst into the club, only for Maeve and Caleb to kill them along with the club owner. When the bodies are picked up by park technicians, they hide among them and are dropped into the maintenance bay. Maeve finds a tablet but is unable to locate where the hosts are being controlled from. An alarm sounds and dozens of other guests storm the maintenance area while being shot at by rebellious hosts led by the blond-haired woman. Using the chaos as cover, Maeve finds a secret elevator and pulls Caleb in before they get cornered.

Frankie[]

Frankie and Uwade prepare to leave with Caleb's friend, Carver, to a safehouse. Frankie refuses to believe that her father is gone and tries to find his contact frequency. Carver placates her by offering to teach her teddy bear a new combat technique. Later that night, he returns the bear to Frankie but seems confused when Frankie mentions his earlier offer. She notices a red stain on her bear's fur and follows several bloodstains to the rear of the house, where Carver's corpse is hidden under some pallets. Frankie warns her mother, who tells her to hide while she takes out her husband's gun, loads it, and runs upstairs. The Carver host quickly realizes that his cover's blown and starts looking for Frankie, eventually finding her in a closet.

Bernard and Stubbs[]

Bernard and Stubbs arrive at a remote location in the desert, and help the driver deactivate a laser trap using hidden mirrors. Suddenly, a pack of humans surround them with guns drawn. Their leader takes a bag from the driver and sees the severed host core. He asks Bernard what business he has with him, and Bernard replies that he knows what the group is looking for: a weapon, buried somewhere in the sands, that can help them fight back against Delos. He tells them that he knows exactly where to find it.

Caleb and Maeve[]

Maeve and Caleb enter a secret lab, where they see faceless hosts working on a variety of projects. One of them is a colony of flies, which form into a tight cluster when they sense Caleb's presence. Maeve detects a strange noise coming from the center of the lab, but Caleb cannot hear it. On a bank of monitors, they see dozens of people being forced to complete puzzles, then point a loaded gun at their own heads and commit suicide. Caleb recognizes one of them as Frankie. Maeve pushes herself to the limit to break through the encryption and unlock Frankie's cell before she pulls the trigger. However, when Caleb hugs her, the doors suddenly close. Maeve is attacked by the Man in Black, but though she is able to kill him, another appears and subdues her. Frankie reveals that she is actually a host; the real Frankie escaped when Uwade shot the Carver host in the head. Pinning Caleb by his arms, she releases a swarm of flies which overwhelm Caleb and enter his body.
