Bernard is taken to the RDF facility by Strand. He experiences flashbacks of killing Theresa, and is deeply affected with these memories. Strand doesn't suspect Bernard to have been the killer, but the situation is interrupted when the PMC find the hidden door. When they go into the corridor beyond the door, they find a room full of hosts with Bernard's face, and it quickly becomes clear to Strands and Stubbs that Bernard is a host. These hosts are built with non-organic material and are presumably older prototypes.
Hale puts Bernard into analysis mode and questions if he would ever lie to her; she is given the response that Bernard would never lie to her. When she asks about the attack on the Mesa, Bernard remarks that he doesn't remember, which concerns Hale, as Bernard's archives show that the memory exists within him somewhere — she points out that perhaps he doesn't want to remember.
Hale is clear in her objective to find what happened to Abernathy's control unit. She leads Bernard back through his memories and we see through a series of flashbacks Bernard's time in the Cradle. It becomes clear through the events that Strand becomes aware of where the control unit is, the Valley Beyond.
