–Charlotte Hale |
Charlotte Hale was the former Executive Director of the board of Delos Destinations, Inc. She is separated from her husband Jacob Reed with whom she has a son, Nathan Hale. They shared custody of Nathan.
She served as the tertiary antagonist of Season 1 and the main antagonist of Season 2 (alongside Dolores Abernathy).
Biography[]
Background[]
Charlotte was an executive director of Delos who was sent to the Westworld park to deal with the Host Uprising. Prior to her arrival to the Park, she was married to Jacob Reed. Hale eventually gave birth to her son, Nathan. However, due to her prioritizing work over her family, Charlotte and Jacob's marriage began to wither and eventually they became estranged and separated with both her and Jacob sharing custody of Nathan. [1]
Due to the change in administration at the Westworld Mesa Hub, Hale was sent to observe the recent actions of the Delos Quality Assurance team and make any action to ensure the wellness of the park. [2]
Later, a host replica of Charlotte Hale was created by Bernard Lowe to carry a version of Dolores Abernathy, who he had "killed" in the Forge.[3] Whilst not identified as Dolores initially, Dolores killed the real Charlotte Hale and assumed her identity in order to leave the parks for the mainland. Once there, Dolores built her own body using the construction machine at Arnold's house and had her control unit transferred into it.
Later, it was revealed that the host masquerading as Hale was one of several copies of Dolores. "Halores", the host pretending to be Hale, assumed Hale's own position as the CEO of the Delos Board.
The Maze[]
After arriving in the Westworld Mesa Hub, Hale firsts visits the Mesa Gold Bar to sunbathe. Lee Sizemore was also sunbathing in the Gold Bar and sees Hale sitting at the bar. Sizemore joins her in hopes to impress Hale as he thinks she was a Guest. She is friendly and plays along for a while. He guesses her favorite narrative and introduces himself. He tries to order another drink, but is cut off and humiliated by the bartender, before grabbing a bottle and leaving to get drunk anyway. [4]
Hale meets Sizemore again in the Control Room where he is drunkenly urinating on the map of the park from the balcony near Theresa Cullen's office. Theresa interrupts him and introduces Hale, the attractive woman from the bar that Sizemore had been trying to impress as the new Executive Director there to oversee changes in Administration. Sizemore is again humiliated and tucks his genitalia back into his pants before Hale properly introduces herself. [4]
Theresa Cullen has a secret meeting with Charlotte to discuss the failure of their plan to transmit data out of the park, revealing that they are working together to get Robert Ford removed from the park. The plan to transmit the data was meant to be a failsafe in the event that Ford wiped the Hosts' memories on his way out. They come up with a plan to demonstrate that the latest updates to the Hosts cause them to become violent, thus humiliating Ford and possibly getting him removed from the park. [5]
The demonstration happens, using Clementine Pennyfeather and a male Host to show a glitch in the Hosts' programming which causes them to remember past experiences and react violently as a result. Charlotte and Theresa watch the demonstration with the board members, and point out the error in the Hosts' programming. Bernard Lowe takes the blame for allowing the introduction of faulty code, and Charlotte fires him. [5]
Bernard took Theresa to the secret house hidden by Robert Ford. Lowe was then revealed to be a Host, as Robert comes into the secret lab. Robert enunciates the same words privately spoken by Charlotte Hale to Theresa about a "blood sacrifice", which brings to question whether Hale is a human or a host. [6]
Charlotte was present along with Ashley Stubbs and Dr. Robert Ford when Theresa's body was brought to the Westworld Mesa Hub after being found in a ravine. She appears upset about Theresa's death, but becomes nervous after Stubbs reveals that Theresa was found with a transmitter containing core code from the hosts. He deduces that she was trying to transmit at a high location in the park and slipped. Charlotte, knowing where the transmitter came from, asks whether Stubbs knows who the information was intended for, to which he says no. She is visibly relieved, but voices her suspicion about the manner of Theresa's death, saying she was careful and wouldn't have made a mistake. [7]
Ford shares a look with her, which she notices, prompting her to say that Theresa felt strongly that the new narratives should be delayed. Ford disagrees, and goes on to say that the demonstration involving Clementine turned out to be a hoax. He says that Clem's code was altered by a technician, and suggests that their access to the Hosts be reigned in. Stubbs voices concerns that it will leave them shorthanded, and Ford offers to oversee the park's safety protocols while a new team is assembled. Charlotte fakes a smile, sarcastically saying how efficient he is. Ford doesn't react, but calmly states it will be a lot of work. He mentions that Bernard should be reinstated to help him, now that Theresa's manipulation of events has been discovered. Charlotte, still smiling and visibly reluctant, agrees, even apologizing. Ford nods and leaves. Charlotte's smile disappears after he is gone. [7]
Later, Charlotte interrupts Lee Sizemore while he programmed a Host. He apologizes for his first meeting with Charlotte, and mentions that he has heard about Theresa's death. Charlotte states it is a loss to the company, and Lee says that he heard she wasn't as loyal as she seemed, and reveals a rumor that is circulating which says she was smuggling company secrets. [7]
Charlotte defends Theresa, saying she died while doing something important for Delos, but refuses to reveal what it was to Lee. He becomes irritated, and boasts that Ford has asked him to secretly create a villain for his new narrative. Charlotte laughs at him, saying that Ford would never entrust him with a key character, and that he is almost finished anyway. She tells him that he is only doing busy work, and offers him a real job working for her on something secret. [7]
The two of them head to Cold Storage, and Charlotte selects the decommissioned Peter Abernathy as storage for the stolen code that Theresa attempted to transmit. She brushes aside Lee's questions, instead telling him to write a story for Peter and create a personality convincing enough that he can exit the park without raising suspicion. She leaves Lee to program Peter, not realizing that Peter was decommissioned for erratic and dangerous behavior. [7]
Charlotte entered Westworld to locate the Man in Black. She found the Man after witnessing him free himself from peril. Hale asked if he would be interested in helping the Board of Directors overthrow Dr. Ford from Delos Incorporated. The Man in Black gave his disregard and told her that the decision was up to them before continuing his search for The Maze. [8]
After Hale returned to the Mesa Hub, she stood on the stairway of the Monorail platform waiting for the Delos Board to arrive. Lee Sizemore joined her and informed that Peter Abernathy was ready and requested to hold the position of Park Director; which Hale granted his request. [9]
Later, in Ford's office, the piano player is playing as Ford works. He stops the music as Hale comes in. She's there to tell him he has to retire, after announcing his new narrative. She tells him that the Hosts will be simplified, and that she's not worried about him destroying anything as he goes. [9]
Ford delivered his final speech introducing his new Narrative. Hale noticed Dolores Abernathy walked up behind Ford before expressing an emotional look. After wishing everyone to enjoy his final Narrative, Dolores followed her programming and shoots Ford in the back of his head, killing him. Charlotte and the rest of the Delos Board fled from their seats to find any sort of cover from Dolores continuing to fire at the Guests. [9]

Personality[]

She is comfortable using the Hosts as it suits her, she has sex with the bandit Hector and lets Clementine get beaten up to achieve her goal.
Hale can behave callously, she fires Bernard Lowe without hesitation after he takes blame for Robert Ford's faulty code.
She dresses carefully and is often seen adjusting her hair, or checking her reflection.

Despite firing him without hesitation when he takes the blame for a software upgrade that went wrong, Hale appears to trust Bernard when physical danger threatens. This is until she discovers his true nature as a host and relentlessly tortures him to gain information.
Hector Escaton[]
Hale has Hector sent to her and has sex with him in her room. He appears to be a favourite of hers.
Man in Black[]
Hale had a working relationship with William, with a high level of trust between the two. William trusted Hale enough for him to pass his executive powers to her whilst seeking to find the centre of the maze. He is unaware, however, that Hale is the mole within Delos.
Theresa Cullen[]
Theresa and Charlotte work together to get Ford removed from the park. They seem to be on good terms, having long meetings to formulate plans. It's notable that Hale deliberately makes Cullen uncomfortable by answering the door to her room naked, having just had sex with the host Hector.
