Synopsis[]

Just say no.

–HBO

Plot[]

Serac[]

Serac opens telling the story of his history, of how he is an anomaly, and that the all of his family are dead. He recounts his childhood with his brother, who is a "sui generis" (one of a kind), who kept the two alive shortly after their families death until they were found by others. Serac remarks that he and his brother sought to create a new god — Rehoboam — but there were issues they could not predict; a remark akin to Dolores Abernathy.

Back in the present, Serac speaks with the President of Brazil, revealing that there is a regional conflict in the north of the country. The President remarks that his intelligence does not know of any conflicts, with Serac remarking that they only know what he wants them to. Serac threatens the President, telling him to stop extractions, which are causing issues. With this, Serac remarks that his presidency is on the line and leaves to fly back to the US in his private jet.

Serac again reminisces about the past, remarking that building of a "god" wasn't easy, they needed data. Luckily, Liam Dempsey Sr. offered to invest in the project and feed Rehoboam all of the data Incite Inc., had collected over the decades prior to the privacy laws. After it appeared that the machine was unable to predict the future, however, Dempsey pulled his funding, and Serac’s brother suggested that the two kill him. Serac, however, remarked that his brother had succeeded in creating the machine.

Serac’s moment is interrupted, however, by Sebastian, who brings him news that they have traced strange signals, one within Liam Dempsey Jr.’s compound, and that he is now missing. Serac is concerned about Liam’s disappearance, but becomes more agitated When Sebastian reveals that he was last seen at a party attended by Dolores; Serac activates all of their assets, remarking that he wants Dolores found.

Caleb, Dolores and Liam[]

Dolores and Caleb bring Liam through the underground bridge, Liam is clearly anxious about his captors and tells the two that they can’t smuggle a high value asset like him without anyone noticing; especially without Serac noticing. Dolores hits back and tells Liam that Serac will be searching for him now that he knows he tried to outbid him for the sale of Delos — a move put in play by Dolores and Caleb with Liam’s stolen money.

Liam questions who Dolores is; she gives him enhanced glasses that allow him to access Rehoboam’s data and he finds that she is nobody, that she apparently has no identity. Dolores tells him that he will help them access Rehoboam’s deep data, but Liam explains that his access key is not enough, and that he would need to connect at the physical node; that, however, would require bypassing onsite security.

Liam pleads with Caleb.

Liam pleads with Caleb to free him, but when Caleb refuses, he injects him in the neck with a drug called “genre”, that causes him to hallucinate; his vision is greatly distorted. Seeing that Serac’s men have found them, the three grab a taxi and begin their journey with Serac’s men in pursuit. When Caleb remarks that they’re using the system to track them, Dolores asks Liam for his access key, saying that she can erase them from the system; he dismisses her, however. An amber alert is issued for their vehicle and the automated system begins pulling the vehicle over to the side of the road, despite Caleb’s efforts to escape. Dolores again asks for Liam’s access key, and when he realises that Serac has no issue killing him, he gives up the key. Dolores takes control of the vehicle, disabling its safety features and the three begin their getaway. Caleb’s perception of the world begin to flux rapidly and Liam remarks that he is “switching genres”. Celeb is handed a gun by Dolores and told to shoot at the car following them. He shoots but misses - however, Dolores is able to control the small missile to blow one of their followers up; she blows up another through the use of explosives.

Having fought off their attackers, Dolores and Caleb are surprised to meet with Ash and Giggles, who agree to help them. Giggles tells Caleb that he knows what drug he has taken, and explains that it is similar to having five drips at the same time. Caleb tells Dolores that despite having his access, she can’t access the node unless she can be in two places at once. With this, Dolores smirks and calls Host Connells, asking him to gather anything he can on Serac using Liam’s access code.

Connells and Bernard[]

Connells tells Bernard to be on his best behavior, and allows him to control himself again. He tells the guard/receptionist to take a break and logs into Rehoboam's control panel with Liam’s access key. Bernard is visibly confused about the concept, and Connells explains that Rehoboam is their god; it’s how they see the future.

Bernard asks what Dolores wants with Rehoboam, but the console announces that the file has been transferred, which allows Connells to avoid the question.

Serac’s history[]

In another flashback, Serac explains that they eventually found a way to predict the future through Rehoboam; first, the stock market. They convinced Dempsey by using a hedge fund of $5m — the outcome of the stock market, quickly making a profit of 20 times that.

They continued to use the market but eventually Dempsey became greedy and they locked him out of the system. Shortly after, things began to fall apart due to anomalies. Serac eventually realised that his brother was one of the anomalies, and the changes drove him insane.

Dolores et al.[]

On the train, Dolores tells everyone that they’re going to release the files Incite holds on everyone - to the entire human population. Liam pleads with Dolores, telling her that it is a bad idea, and could result in riots, murder, or even suicide. Despite this, Dolores exclaims that everyone has a right to know.

Liam explains to Ash about her brother, Happy, saying that he is more than likely going to die. Despite this, Caleb remarks that everyone deserves to know, and that they should not be at the mercy of the system. With this, she gives the order and Connells releases the files. Dolores, Caleb and all of her friends watch as everyone around them reads their files.

Emerging from the station, conflicts are immediately visible as a result of the file transfer, and Liam finds it difficult to comprehend that Dolores has released the files to everyone around the world. Caleb questions what genre the drug is currently at, but Happy corrects him, citing that this is reality.

Mesmerised by the current situation, Caleb is slow to react when two people attempt to shoot him, but Dolores stands in the way, taking the bullets before shooting the two. Caleb looks at Dolores with concern, confused as to how the bullets have not affected her.

Serac and Dempsey[]

Ten years after their initial success with Rehoboam, Dempsey becomes curious about Serac and his brother’s work and visits one of their labs. Inside, he finds hundreds of cell-like containers housing people; one of these people is Serac’s brother.

Questioning Serac, he is told that Rehoboam would usually send these people away to die — either at war or other means — however they can help them by changing their DNA and personalities. When Dempsey is repulses by Serac for testing on his own brother, Serac reveals that he found his brother looking up certain scenarios and in one, he planned to kill Dempsey.

Bernard and Connells[]

Genre Promotional — TF, JW

Connells and Bernard watch as the files are released.

Connells tells Bernard that Serac will send someone for them shortly, given what damage they have done to his plans. He shows Bernard a reeducation facility, and explains that this is where Serac puts those outliers who do not conform to Rehoboam’s predictions. Connells tells Bernard that they are not the enemy.

The two are interrupted, however, by Stubbs who attacks Connells allowing Bernard to get the upper hand and take the control button from him. Bernard questions what Dolores has planned, but they are interrupted by Martel, and Connells explains that Serac sent them. He warns Stubbs and Bernard to leave before they are all killed. Bernard suggests that Connells comes with them, but he replies that his role is finished and stays behind to meet Martel head on.

Martin is taken into his office where he talks with a projection of Serac. Serac questions who is to blame, and after a brief conversation, Connells says that it was him. He sets off an explosive device under the desk which blows a large portion of the building up; Stubbs and Bernard watch from below.

Dolores on the beach[]

On the beach, Liam asks what will happen to him. Ash replies that he can more than likely see the outcome through the glasses; he replies that Incite predicts they will steal the little he has left. When Liam becomes increasingly agitated, Ash shoots him, remarking that she does have a choice. Liam dies shortly after in Caleb’s arms, remarking that it was “Caleb’s fault”. Caleb is confused at what Liam means, asking Dolores who Liam thinks he is.

Serac and Dempsey Sr.[]

Genre Promotional — Vincent Cassek

Serac is furious when he finds out about Dolores' plans.

Sebastian tells Serac that they have identified which files Dolores was looking into: his.

In a scene from the past, Serac and Dempsey talk. Dempsey tells Serac that he will tell the public about Rehoboam and Serac’s experiments, however Serac reveals that in each of Rehoboam’s projections, revealing their work ends in human extinction. Serac shows Dempsey his crashed jet, and apologies, telling Dempsey “you didn’t make it”; he kills Dempsey and covers up his death.

Dolores speaks with a projection of Serac, who tells her that he is in control. Dolores says Delos also thought they were in control, and were wrong; she remarks that it is time everyone woke up, and ends the call with a visibly concerned Serac.
